Angry Panda Workshop is a new values driven media & entertainment project. We are creating & producing Asian American stories addressing pressing issues facing our communities. We have come together to pair our experiences of organizing in Asian American communities since our teens, with award winning storytelling and filmmaking to center working class and poor Asian communities not often seen in Hollywood. We challenge Asian stereotypes and the model minority myth, and we work to highlight Asian ethnicities and Asian experiences whose stories have not often been told.

The Issue:

Representation alone has not been enough to address issues of hate, violence, inequity and need for solidarity. Recent changes in media & entertainment has still not created real understanding of Asian American communities. In the 2021 Olympics, medal-winning Asian Americans shared their experiences with anti-Asian hate. Even Asian actors on well-loved shows centering Asian families have been asked to perform Asian stereotypes. Stories of individual achievement are inspiring and important, but often leave behind the struggles, community-building, and resilience of everyday working class Asians. Asian Americans have a long history of organizing and fighting for justice. Along with increased representation, we need new narratives that explore and deepen the portrayal of Asian Americans exploring values and issues of equity, interdependence, solidarity, authentic democracy, and an economy that serves both people and planet.

The Solution:

Our project, Funny Poor Asians, is a web series about a team of boisterous working-class Asian American community organizers who train an aloof group of high school students to solve issues of inequality in their community. Based on our personal experiences organizing with Asian and Pacific Islander youth, these stories will challenge the model minority myth that Asians are passive and working to assimilate to American culture. The web series will use comedy and drama to show the ways that working class Asians learn about and experience oppression, the ways their struggles are interdependent to the struggles of Black, Latino/a/x communities, Native American and Arab communities, the contradictions between these communities and how they work to build solidarity. The tone is comparable to Awkwafina is Nora from Queens meets Parks & Rec . Audiences will learn social justice issues and community organizing tactics through an entertaining comedy format.
