Since our inaugural season in the fall of 2015, close to 200 Asian films have been premiered with the mission to cultivate U.S. audiences’ interest in and understanding of Asian cultures. Since 2020, our festival has gone hybrid with films presented online as well as in-cinema or at a drive-in with live audiences. We take our pride in giving selected films and the filmmakers their own spotlight by featuring either live or pre-recorded in-depth Q&As.

The Issue:

While panels and funding opportunities organized by e.g. Visual Communications in Los Angeles, Asian CineVision in New York and the National Asian American Telecommunications Assn. in San Francisco have provided institutional support for Asian American filmmakers creating feature length films, the issue is that majority of their completed films are mostly absent or dismissed from the main market place; and many of them never get distributed or shown to a wider audience. It is critical that APUC festival's program should include a permanent space to fill this void with the goal to amplify Asian American voices, perspectives and histories via Asian American filmmakers' works. Additionally, when quarantine mandates are lifted and Asian American filmmakers are able to travel safely & freely, panels for in-depth discussions should be held when the festival is in session highlighting the common and essential humanity shared by people of all cultures through the storytelling.

The Solution:

With cinema being a highly effective medium in conveying the human experience in all its complexity and universality, the issue can be resolved by adding a new competition in our bi-annual festivals program starting 2022. Submissions by 1st and 2nd time Asian American filmmakers are invited to submit their works answering our "Call for Entries". 8 finalists (per season) will be picked to enter the competition by a “Screening Committee” composed of members of Asian Americans chosen from all walks of life. All these films will be exhibited with filmmakers in attendance as part of the official selection. At the end of festival, a Jury made up of film professionals will pick the Best Feature Film w/Asian American Focus . A $5,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winner. Simultaneously educational outreach screenings of finalists’ films will be screened at the Chicago Public Schools to enhance Asian American history studying.
