CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) elevates and changes the stories Hollywood tells about the AAPI communities in three ways: (1) Nurturing and engaging creative talent and executive leadership. (2) Provide cultural content consulting and talent referrals. (3) Championing projects for critical box office and streaming success. Through our industry-renowned programs such as the CAPE New Writers Fellowship and the CAPE Leaders Fellowship, our consulting and talent referral services, the CAPE Database, and #GoldOpen, CAPE is breaking barriers to authentic and nuanced representation from the writers’ room to the boardroom to the living room.

The Issue:
According to the Geena Davis Institute, 80% of pop culture consumed around the world is created in the U.S., which means we are also exporting our values and negative stereotypes of marginalized communities globally. It still is not rare to hear racist, anti-Asian jokes on stage (both from pros and newbies ), on television , or even at the Oscars . Whether it's Apu or Long Duk Dong, the AAPI community has been the butt of the joke for far too long. This consistent dehumanization has led to members of our communities facing terrible consequences in real life, ranging from bullying to loss of life. It’s also no secret that the comedy world is dominated by white, male performers. Many comics of color are not afforded the same opportunities or face overwhelming obstacles in their careers that could potentially derail their success. This initiative will aim to close that opportunity gap.
The Solution:
- Workshops and sessions with high-level industry experts and comedic mentors, with plans to tailor topics and discussions to each class.
- Creating alternative performance spaces where the comics can consistently perform to develop, craft, and perfect their material.
- Producing a comedy showcase in major comedy hubs and festivals.
- Providing continued support and networking opportunities throughout their career with the ultimate goal of a comedy special from a major streaming service.
