Chinatown Service Center (CSC)'s mission is to provide outstanding services and advocacy that promote better quality of life and equal opportunity for immigrants and other communities. Our organization started at the Chinese Methodist Church in 1971 with a group of volunteers who worked at a small office within the church to counsel many newly arrived Chinese immigrants, providing them with bilingual support in navigating their new life in the United States. CSC provides comprehensive care to the community within six focus areas, including FQHC Health Center, Behavioral Health, Social Services, Community Economic Development, Youth Center, and Workforce Development. We value serving underserved and underprivileged communities. Currently, we have offices in Los Angeles, Alhambra, San Gabriel, and Monterey Park to serve the large AAPI communities.

The Issue:

Newly arrived immigrants struggle to navigate the United States as they face culture shock and language barriers that may prevent them from receiving access to health care, mental health services, government-funded programs (Calfresh, Medi-Cal, etc.). Many of the youths in the community struggle with low self-esteem, language barriers, and are confused about the American school systems. Newly arrived immigrants encounter significant challenges when trying to navigate life in the United States, including culture shock and language barriers that hinder their access to essential services such as healthcare, mental health support, and government-funded programs like CalFresh and Medi-Cal. Additionally, many youths within the community grapple with issues such as low self-esteem, language barriers, and confusion regarding the intricacies of the American school system.

The Solution:

Through our diverse departments and targeted focus areas, we are dedicated to assisting low-income AAPI communities by offering a range of direct services. These services encompass language interpretation, case management, access to multilingual medical and behavioral care, as well as youth-oriented support. Within our medical department, we are actively integrating Eastern and Western medicine practices, such as Qi Gong and acupuncture, to provide comprehensive healthcare. In our youth department, we offer bilingual services that empower young individuals and families, enabling them to develop leadership skills, receive homework assistance, prepare for college, and navigate the complexities of the education system. Additionally, our social services department is committed to aiding newly arrived immigrants by translating important correspondence, assisting elderly citizens in finding IHSS providers, facilitating applications for vital resources like CalFresh and Medi-Cal, and providing legal services, among other valuable support.
