EM Collective's goal is to empower Asians and Asians Americans through storytelling, create pathways to effective advocacy and civic engagement, create community inclusion events, and tell the stories of local AAPI businesses, immigrant and refugee, cultural history and experiences of racism throughout the Bay Area. EM Collective has been doing the groundwork of civic engagement over the past year since there is an increase in hate crimes against AAPI individuals. We bring together creators to capture the rich stories and perspectives of our community in order to preserve and share Asian culture and identity through media.

The Issue:

There is a cultural belief within the Asian culture to keep a low profile or out of the spotlight and just continue to function within society. The issue is that the AAPI community is more hesitant to not speak out about their experience in racism and xenophobia because of their cultural belief. This belief caused a disconnect within the community which caused many AAPI individuals to not speak up and share their stories, knowledge, and sight through their own lived experiences. According to the Santa Clara County Office of Immigrant Relation, approximately 34% of the population identifies as AAPI, about 618,740 individuals. Santa Clara County represents a high number of AAPI immigrants and refugees throughout the county that are in the working class. This project seeks to amplify the AAPI voices through rich storytelling to empower the AAPI community and build allyships.

The Solution:

EM Collective’s solution to amplify the AAPI voices and to encourage the AAPI to speak during an injustice will be through rich storytelling using a media platform. EM Collective will be filming, documenting, conducting interviews throughout the AAPI community within the Bay Area. First, the project will be documenting local AAPI businesses that have been family owned for generations and newly opened businesses to be seen. Second, the project will interview AAPI individuals on stories of refugees and immigrants to be heard. Third, the project will include various community-inclusive events (e.g. social justice rallies, Asian Mental Health Conference 2021, etc.) to promote community empowerment. And fourth, the project will educate the public by documenting and filming the AAPI food culture and main traditions to promote multiculturalism and build unity.
