The Issue:

There are 4 million Filipinos in the United States, we are the third largest Asian subgroup in the nation. Despite landing in America in October 1587 in Morro Bay -- decades before pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620s, Filipinos are perpetually being told to go back to their country. Their stories are hardly mentioned in American history books. We are reclaiming our history and shaping our future narrative in our version of Balagtasan Talks . Balagtasan is a traditional Filipino form of debate in verse. FYLPRO plans to innovate this form of storytelling by leveraging our network of leaders who are titans of their industry. They are at the intersection of the past and present. Our version of Balagtasan would include a multimedia, multiplatform project spanning digital and physical. Stories from this project would inform the first memorial in DC that recognizes Filipino American contributions to the US.

The Solution:

To reclaim our history and shape our future, we turn to the past for inspiration and innovation. In our version of Balagtasan Talks, we present a multimedia, multiplatform series that features young Filipino leaders from all industries to share their journey as Filipino Americans. By tapping into a traditional Filipino form of storytelling in verse debate, FYLPRO transforms and elevates our Ted-style talks into digestible and shareable content that is both educational and inspiring for all ages. By starting with young leaders' experiences as Filipino Americans, their stories serve as the connective throughline of amplifying and raising the visibility of Filipinos throughout American history and future. This approach is best suited to answer the call to make Filipinos more visible because it provides the space for Filipinos to finally become the main characters of their own stories by leveraging the mediums the community uses the most - social, video and audio.
