The Issue:

Though there are many QTAPI people in the Bay Area, there are few organizations or ad hoc events that exclusively showcase and encourage QTAPI artistry, talent, and personhood. There are some local drag shows that have all-API lineups, but they don't happen often and are not regular, scheduled occurrences; performers also practice separately and don't interact in person before or after the show. Bay Area QTAPI performers must repeatedly advocate for and pitch themselves to individual gigs and opportunities to make a living. Needless to say, there is also an industry-wide issue of lacking API representation in entertainment and performing arts. Considering how many more API live in the Bay Area than any other part of the US, it is imperative that there are ample opportunities for API to perform, go on stage, develop their entertainment personas, and get paid for performing in a warm and supportive community.

The Solution:

GAPA Runway is a 30+ year annual showcase of QTAPI artistry, talent, and humanity that takes place in one of the most well-known theatres in San Francisco. The show is structured like a pageant for entertainment purposes, but the focus of the show and production process is on celebrating and highlighting the QTAPI community. Contestants can participate either as their drag/performer personas or as themselves--this incentivizes both seasoned and newbie QTAPI performers to sign up and take to the stage. The rehearsal/production process allows contestants and organizers to interact repeatedly before the show, and the two pageant winners go on to represent and unite the QTAPI community for a year until the next Runway. Titleholders are also incentivized to fundraise for the QTAPI community during their reign. Runway actively recruits and invites QTAPI of all ethnicities, sexualities, and genders to participate, giving a platform to every type of API identity.
