The Issue:

Asian Americans represent the fastest growing racial and ethnic minority group in the country. According to the latest US Census, Asians make up nearly 6% of the US population. In May 2021, as our nation recognized Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month which provides an opportunity to showcase the contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States, Asian Americans came under siege. It felt as if many still hold to the understanding and empathy for Asian Americans as seeing them being perpetually foreign and with the constant reflection that "they go back to where they come from," forgetting that Asian people have been in this country for centuries. When Golden Lotus Foundation recently held a strategic planning session the assaults on people of Asian descent revealed not only verbal attacks, but now crossed over into physical attacks requiring a new action approach to address Asian racial tensions.

The Solution:

The Story Book Project, WE stand together as Asian Americans proposal will interview 60 Asian Americans by asking them to name one positive and one difficult experience they have had specific to Asian culture. Their responses will be videotaped and presented in a written photo shoot display, and assembled on portable racks to be exhibited at PPLD libraries for approximately 3-4 weeks, then in schools, community centers, senior nursing homes and public buildings (70-80 destinations) for the grant period. Visitors viewing the exhibit will be able to call in on a hot line to leave voice messages, and have the opportunity to write their feedback and feelings in traveling guest books. Each month the public will be invited to share their thoughts guided by a facilitator to draw conclusions, make recommendations, and develop action plans addressing Asian Americans being seen, heard, empowered and be united to address Asian equality.
