India Home is dedicated to empowering the South Asian and Indo-Caribbean senior immigrant community in NYC. Through our centers, we provide culturally competent activities, meals, case management, educational talks, language and technology lessons, and seminars on finance and law. Our organization arose from the need for South Asian seniors to have a sense of community and services tailored to their needs. We offer our seniors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to share their stories, access resources, establish avenues for empowerment and advocacy, and create a space for themselves in an otherwise inaccessible social services system.

About the Organization:

The Issue:

As we carry out our mission, we have found that access to affordable housing is extremely necessary to ensure a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for our seniors. Over half of Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani NYC seniors are already living in burdened households and are experiencing social isolation. Existing options in NYC do not reflect the diverse needs of South-Asian and Indo-Caribbean seniors due to a lack of culturally competent accessibility such as to food, cultural activities, and a community with a shared language, which leads to low enrollment and interest in existing affordable housing structures, and dissatisfaction for those who have enrolled. Furthermore, loneliness in seniors, oftentimes a result of housing insecurity, leads to a 59% higher risk of physical and mental decline and puts the risk of early death associated with loneliness and social isolation on par with premature death risk associated with major health conditions.

The Solution:

“Coliving”, or community living shared housing models, is a culturally familiar model for the South Asian community that helps promote social connection. Given the relevance of and interest in coliving, India Home seeks to develop a fully furnished co-living facility for 10-12 seniors in a single-family home located in Queens, New York. Within this property, we will create a vibrant atmosphere where our seniors can live together and enjoy cultural celebrations, personalized case management, and community-building activities with their housemates. This project is an affordable, culturally sensitive, and sustainable way to foster social connections, mutual support, and to promote healthy aging for our seniors. Here, seniors with similar experiences, cultures, and diets can feel a sense of connection living together. We plan to expand this model to Jamaica and Richmond Hill as the model will generate income to provide a continued benefit sustainably.
