The Issue:

Orange County, California – home to the nation’s third-largest Asian American population – has significant gaps in our mental health services ecosystem and several alarming mental health trends manifesting among the local population. Nearly 1 in 6 residents are in need of help for their mental, emotional, or substance abuse challenges, and suicide has tragically been on the rise in County for the last decade. Alarmingly, there are too few mental health providers who are equipped with the knowledge, training, and linguistic and cultural competence to properly address mental health challenges impacting AAPI community members. While the need is undeniably great, AAPI children and families experience pronounced disparities in access to critical mental health services due to disproportionate barriers like stigma, cost, misinformation, and need for translation and interpretation services. Orange County needs targeted outreach, awareness building, and culturally and linguistically responsive mental health interventions to better support AAPI families.

The Solution:

With Gold Futures Challenge funding, Mensana Mental Health Services seeks to increase the number of Asian American and Pacific Islander children, adolescents, and families who access high-quality mental health services in Orange County, California. Through this project, Mensana will produce a targeted marketing campaign, outreach strategies, as well as education and information sessions to increase understanding about available mental health services while reducing cultural shame and stigma surrounding their usage. Mensana will also offer therapeutic groups to AAPI children and teens who need support – held in schools and trusted community-based settings – in order to address their challenges with anxiety, depression, isolation, and trauma. All services and activities will be provided in ways that are culturally responsive, linguistically accessible, and that aim to reduce stigma and other unique barriers to AAPI families’ access to support.
