The Issue:

Due to the unprecedented nature and economic downturn of the COVID-19 global pandemic, KAFLA pivoted from our signature social service programs to respond to the vital needs of our community. While other non-profit organizations switched to remote work in March 2020, our doors remained open to triage upwards of 300 phone calls per day and a rolling waitlist of over 400 in-person appointments. To address the gap and lack of services provided in Korean and Mandarin, KAFLA swiftly responded by providing multi-cultural/lingual counseling and technical assistance to help our most underserved, monolingual/limited-English proficient Korean American and diverse neighboring community members—the vast majority of whom are small business/mom & pop store owners and employees—navigate critical economic support. Korean Americans from LA County, Orange County, San Diego, San Jose, Phoenix, and Las Vegas visit KAFLA for help; many out-of-state Korean Americans call seeking assistance.

The Solution:

KAFLA is the lead organization in California to provide multi-cultural/lingual counseling and technical assistance to monolingual/limited English-proficient Korean Americans and diverse community members. We have assisted 20,000 people to receive $50 million in Unemployment Insurance/Assistance, SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans, Targeted EIDL Advance, Paycheck Protection Program, SBA Restaurant Revitalization Fund, Emergency Renter’s Assistance Program, State & Local Rental Assistance, Relief Grants & Microloans, and other critical economic aid to withstand financial distress due to the pandemic.
We have produced over 300 YouTube KAFLA TV “how-to-apply” videos on COVID-19 related financial assistance, which collectively have over 2.4 million views due to the overwhelming demand.
We raised and distributed $443,000 through our COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide direct hardship assistance to 405 undocumented immigrants, 564 low-income families, and 52 small business owners.
