LAAUNCH.ORG — LEADING ASIAN AMERICANS TO UNITE FOR CHANGE

LAAUNCH was created by in 2020 to address anti-AAPI racism and underrepresentation on a national basis. The founders/board members bring over 150 years of business, nonprofit and entrepreneurial experience to work on high impact initiatives. Our major project thus far has been the STAATUS Index, one of the first nationally-representative studies of American attitudes towards AAPIs in twenty years. Key data from our research reveal the disturbing depth of racism, stereotypes and invisibility towards AAPIs. We seek to continue the STAATUS Index in 2022 to track our progress in fighting racism and discrimination and gaining greater acceptance in our country.

About the Organization:

The founders/board members bring over 150 years of business, nonprofit and entrepreneurial experience to work on high impact initiatives. The Issue:

AAPIs are under attack in America. Hate incidents against AAPIs have increased 74% nationally to 6,603 by end of March 2021. AAPIs are being brutally attacked, spat upon, stabbed, shunned and abused at unprecedented and unacceptable levels.
AAPIs are underrepresented in America. AAPIs make up only 2.6% of the top leaders in business, law, politics, sports, and media/entertainment in America. In Silicon Valley, AAPIs are the least likely group to be promoted to senior positions. Our 2021 STAATUS (Social Tracking of Asian Americans in the U.S.) Index research has shown that 42% of Americans cannot name a prominent AAPI, and 11% and 9% cite Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, respectively.
What are the underlying causes of these inequities for AAPIs?? Hate crimes research states that stereotypes and prejudices form the root causes of racism and discrimination. Therefore, more research about how AAPIs are perceived by other Americans is greatly needed.

The Solution:

To assess the attitudes of Americans towards AAPIs, we will expand and enhance our STAATUS Index in 2022. This year’s inaugural study was well received and included several key data points:
  • Nearly 80% of AAPI respondents feel discriminated against and not respected in the U.S.;
  • 32% of Americans are not aware of an increase in hate crimes and racism against AAPIs over the past year;
  • 20% of Americans believe AAPIs are more loyal to their country of origin (e.g. China or Japan) than to the U.S.;
  • Half of respondents incorrectly believe that AAPIs are well-represented in leadership positions.
After generating over 100 articles, 1.6 billion impressions on traditional media, and 33 million views on social media this year, we will continue to increase awareness about AAPI stereotypes and misperceptions with the 2022 STAATUS Index.
