LEAP High School

LEAP High School is dedicated to serving students who are new to the United States and who are learning English while earning a high school diploma. As an alternative high school, LEAP High School enrolls English Learner (EL) students up to age 21, and at all levels 1-4, and provides an educational opportunity for students whose needs often do not match the offerings provided in traditional high schools. Students come from different parts of the world, where most have never been properly introduced to using fitness equipment. With the proper fitness equipment, it will allow me to introduce the fitness equipment in a safe environment where the students will not be judged by their lack of knowledge of the equipment, but encouraged to try and use the equipment to build a lifelong joy for fitness and wellness.

The Issue:

We are a small school with a limited budget. Our student body is made up of 100% immigrant and refugee students from around the world. Health and wellness is important but we lack the proper equipment for fitness training. Fitness is very important for physical and for mental health. Fitness equipment allows for aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Having a variety of equipment will allow for the students to work different muscles in their bodies. Having the proper equipment will allow for students to monitor their progress and stay motivated to work towards their fitness goals.

The Solution:

As the teacher, I have to get creative with the limited resources I have to keep the students engaged. I incorporate body weight exercises along with the few kettlebells and light dumbbells that I have available to me. This will help the students build stamina and feel fit, but lacks the opportunity for the students to build power and strength. With the proper fitness equipment, it will allow the students a variety of exercises to keep the excitement and motivation to work towards their fitness goals.
