Music Fusian NW is based in Clark County, Washington and we are the first nonprofit organization in the county that brought cultural blending concerts with a focus on Asian Americans into communities. To address the issue of Asian American history being missing from our public education system, we are planning to create an educational program, Enriching Education Through Asian and Asian American Music, for public schools in the county. Once implemented, this will be the first program in Clark County to introduce Asian American culture in public schools.

The Issue:

Asian Americans are 5%, or 24,413, of the population of Clark County, Washington. Although Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in the county, we continue to struggle with the lack of sense of belonging. The COVID-19 crisis has intensified this struggle as community members experienced both overt and covert xenophobic and discriminatory behaviors against Asian Americans. Furthermore, like the rest of the country, the Asian American history is missing from our public education system in the State of Washington. We have seen the serious consequences of such omission from past tragic events against Asian Americans to the recent increased hate crimes against and shootings of Asian Americans fueled by COVID-19 crisis. We cannot afford to wait any longer to address this issue.

The Solution:

1) To increase awareness of Asian American culture in our community, we are the first nonprofit organization in the county that brought cultural blending concerts with a focus on Asian Americans into communities. Our concerts and events blend music from Asian and other cultures, and are performed by Asian American musicians, musicians from other cultures, and students from different backgrounds. Also, we collaborate with local music groups and introduce Asian music and songs for performance, and we volunteer in culture events.
2) To address the issue of Asian American history being missing from our public education system, we are planning to create an educational program, Enriching Education Through Asian and Asian American Music, to provide K-12 students in Clark County an introduction of Asian and Asian American experience through music. Once implemented, this will be the first program in Clark County to introduce Asian American culture in public schools.
