A collaboration, called OC HUES, consisting of OCAPICA, Southland and KCS (fiscally sponsored by KCS). OC HUES’ mission is to Hear, Unite, Empower, and See the Asian American communities we serve in Orange County. Our organizations specialize in community and health care services and have worked together providing culturally responsive education, training, referrals and linkage for equitable COVID-19 services to our Asian American and Pacific Islander community members. As our country is reopening, we want to continue to uplift and to be trailblazers for our communities in an innovative, long-lasting way through a podcast.

The Issue:

Asian Americans (AA) have been scapegoats in American society for centuries. In contemporary society, AAs are blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic leading to a large increase in anti-Asian attacks. The anti-Asian rhetoric calling COVID-19 the ‘Kung Flu’ and ‘Chinese Virus’ has negatively impacted AAs nationally. According to Stop AAPI Hate’s National Report, there were 4,193 hate incidents in 2020 and 2,410 in 2021. This is a 150% increase from hate crimes in 2019 that were reported and countless incidents have not been reported. This rhetoric has fueled xenophobic resentment with acts of violence reminding AAs that they are ‘perpetual foreigners’. Locally, these issues have directly affected OC’s AA communities. In combination with anti-Asian rhetoric and hate crimes, there is a lack of culturally competent resources that are accessible and inclusive for our communities. There need to be different strategies organizations use to deeply impact our AA community members.

The Solution:

OC HUES proposes to execute a podcast, called OC HUES: A Palette of Views. The podcast embodies a comfortable, respectful atmosphere to provide opportunity for deeper conversations. Through the podcast, OC HUES will provide a platform for AAs from differing backgrounds to share their thoughts and experiences. There will be a mixture of influential individuals and community members from OC. The diverse backgrounds and experiences give other community members the ability to relate and learn from the guests that the podcast will have. OCAPICA, Southland, and KCS have rooted themselves into OC’s AA communities through decades of community services and healthcare, therefore, OC HUES has a communal strong foundation.  Podcasts are an innovative platform that has become integrated into people’s lives.  The proposed project is a newer medium for community leaders to utilize to raise awareness, to create a greater sense of community, and to make change.
