Rising Voices Fund, a project of Tides Foundation, funds the infrastructure to develop the leadership and organizing capacity of Asian American women (cis, trans, and gender non-conforming) and young people. Founded in 2019, we support organizing for power through strategic narrative work, civic engagement and election protection programs, a youth fellowship, a participatory action research on the impact of COVID-19, through the creation of a Tsuru for Solidarity chapter, partnerships with different organizations, and through one of the only multilingual outreach programs for Asian Americans in the state to engage with our community around mutual aid, vaccines, and deep canvassing.

The Issue:

Asian Americans are rendered invisible under white supremacy: a model minority that separates white folks from other folks of color. After the COVID-19 pandemic brought a rise in anti-Asian violence and rhetoric from elected officials from all parties, we need to give our communities tools to understand and articulate our issues, show our communities that we are changemakers, and clear the pathway to action. Asian Americans have the lowest political representation compared with any other racial or ethnic group. We don’t see ourselves in power, efforts to engage our communities are under resourced, and so we disengage from the process. Even in the 2020 election, where a survey we conducted found that Asian Americans were incredibly motivated to vote and felt that the election was a referendum on racism, AAPI Data found over 50% of Asian Americans across the country had not been contacted by anyone about the election.

The Solution:

Is to create content that resonates, is accessible, and in many Asian languages that can be widely used and disseminated as a part of a larger layered organizing and civic engagement campaign to activate and educate the Asian American community in Michigan. We know that our communities are ready to get involved and are hungry for this effort. We were able to shift Asian Americans’ perception of their own power to affect change by over 30%, just by asking specific Asian American community questions. During our 2020 electoral program, we ran video ads in 8 different languages that had higher engagement rates than our English ads. When our messages are culturally specific and in language, even those of us who read and speak English will be more inclined to watch all the way to the end and share with our families.
