Satrang is committed to equal opportunity for all persons. No one shall be treated differently, separately, or have any action that directly affects the individual be taken on the basis of race, religion, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or disability. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary last year. We are an all volunteer board that continues to promote safe spaces, programming for our community. We host events every month that bring folks together to support each other. Our vision is Our Vision to promote awareness, acceptance, and empowerment through social, educational, and advocacy-related events. We envision an inclusive and visible community in which South Asian LGBTQ-identified people feel whole and heard. We are the only LGBTQAI organization for South Asians diaspora. We host events like drag night, Family Day, Paint & Sip , Spoken word, Community cooking and all of these events are FREE to our community. Our only fundraiser for the year is our Annual Gala. We have a storied history of over 25 years and what’s remarkable is that despite being an all volunteer organization we have been able to continue this amazing work, through the sheer love and commitment of our membership which is growing. We also pride ourselves to be stewards for the next generation with a vision to have our own physical space to continue this kind of activism and comfort.

The Issue:

As an all volunteer board, capacities of the board members can vary at different points. we are also an Intergenerational community and so keeping everyone engaged and present is quite a task. We have structured the organization as follows mentorship board : this has 2 old board members who help mentor the new membership and also act as a bridge between everyone the various generations. board : here we have 7 members who act as co chairs and help plan and execute events every month, apart from also building allyship working with other community spaces committee members : these are young volunteers who help board members with events, learning the work and then slowly become board members allowing us to keep the continuity going. as a volunteer organization we are limited on just how much we can expect and also due to turnaround we are not able to branch out to do more outreach, provide a physical space for our community. We are hoping that with this grant we can probably hire an ED ( a paid position with benefits) to help take us to the next level. Also part of that ED’s job will be to help garner more grants so we can continue the work. without that next step we will continue to just do the bare minimum we have been able to. Our vision is to really branch out and tackle topics like : help focus and train on trans rights / allow for better visibility on college campuses and help spread the word / create a fundraiser to perhaps purchase a community center for our organization.

The Solution:

We host events every month for our community. Keeping in mind that we are an intergenerational organization that need to serve everyone here are some of the programming. 1. Paint & sip : we hosted this event at Griffith Park and provided folks with paint supplies / snacks / and an instructor to enjoy hanging out together. Over 45 folks attended 2. movie night : we hosted the premiere of Joyland a movie that was banned in Pakistan with Pakistan Arts Council. We subsided the $25 ticket to $10 for our membership and saw over 80 folks come for this event. 3. drag brunch : we hosted the 1st ever drag brunch at Bombay Beach restaurant and had over 7 drag performances. Our community was treated to drag, food and drinks for a fee of $25 which we then used to pay all the drag performers. 4. beach day picnic : we hosted over 40 community members at Will Rogers Beach with food, music and games. All this was free to our membership. Upcoming events are - annual family day : here we invite our families and chosen families to come spend the day with us. Over the years we have gone from 20 to almost a 100 last year. Our goal is to bring family members to enjoy in community. As our membership grows with families, children we are also trying to create spaces - satrang Pride event : this year June 30th we are hosting the 1st ever Pride festival where we will have performances, queer vendors who can showcase their wares, food from a queer chef - writing workshop & Music Night : we are hosting a writing workshop led by a board member to help our community write and express their journey’s. Also music night is karaoke - Annual Gala : this is the only event where folks have to buy tickets. We have raffles and also give out 2 awards. One is the legacy award for someone who has worked in the community and another Visionary where we award a young doing amazing work for the LGBTQ causes.
