The Issue:
We'd all love to see more AAPIs in Hollywood on screen! Asian-Americans, particularly AAPI females, are underrepresented in mainstream media. According to research from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, 39% of the films studied between 2007 and 2019 had zero Asian and Pacific Islander characters - and this figure jumped to 59% specifically for Asian and Pacific Islander girls and women. Research also shows that only 44 films featured an AAPI lead or co-lead, 14 of which were Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and only six of those were female – and none were older than 40 years old, and none were part of the LGBTQ community. AAPIs tend to be portrayed as the model minority or 'fetishized' in cinema. The film we aspire to produce had a major production company and talent attached, but faced feedback that some didn't see how "an Asian female lead can open the box office."
