The Issue:

Art has the power to shape our culture and inform how future generations understand our present. Over the pandemic, it became all too clear how critical creating greater representation in the arts is to ensuring broader visibility to Asian communities everywhere now and in the future. But doing so presents a challenge, as many artists earlier in their careers lack the resources and mentorship to successfully develop their work after school. This became particularly pronounced during the lockdown as artists lost access to studio spaces to work and struggled to make the necessary connections to galleries and institutions to show their work.

The Solution:

We believe in the power of community and seek to create a greater representation of Asian artists often overlooked in Western-centered art canon. Our efforts are targeted toward connecting Asian artists and art professionals through conversation & education, direct support & fundraising, and community-building events. Conversation & Education - At the heart of our programming is the development of an online archive of artists and curators. Through weekly in-depth features and live online conversations, THAT Co. chronicles our community in the arts while bringing new audiences to emerging and mid-career artists from the Asian diaspora. Direct Support & Fundraising - THAT Co. cultivates the next generation of Asian artists by granting physical studio space and access to resources to navigate their careers. We also create opportunities for artists to live off their art by mounting public exhibitions featuring emerging Asian artists that bring greater visibility and sales. Community Building Events - We believe in grounding everything we do in the people. By bridging online connections through offline events, panel discussions, and collaborations with allied organizations, we can forge a strong community that furthers our commitment to supporting and uplifting the Asian diaspora in the arts.
