The Juggernaut

The Juggernaut is a media company and community for South Asians around the world. Our first target market is the United States, where South Asians are the fastest major demographic and over $460b of spending power. We are funded some by incredible people: Y Combinator, Precursor Ventures, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, #5SmartReads founder Hitha Palepu, BuzzFeed CTO Peter Wang, and several others. Despite our funding levels, we've always been asked to do more with less. We're applying for this grant so that we can accelerate our vision to create a go-to resource and community for the South Asian diaspora.

The Issue:

South Asians are the fastest major demographic in the United States and over $460b of spending power. Yet, mainstream media usually covers our stories with little nuance, depth, or importance. You have to be among the most well-known South Asian Americans to even be considered worthwhile as a subject. Mainstream media barely registered the Indianapolis shooting, which killed 4 Sikh Americans, or the Canadian murder of a Pakistani family in June. Or, we're often relegated to the model minority myth and our stories are only about excellence — or, on the other end of the spectrum, poverty porn.

The Solution:

We've shown our ability to report on our community with depth and nuance via written journalism. We have recruited strong editors, writers, and illustrators and photographers. We now want to expand our surface area to free podcasts. We believe this will allow us to reach out to more people — through a new medium that also allows us to reach out to people who might not be able to afford a subscription to our services. We envision starting a slate of podcasts: a weekly news show, an interview series, a deep-dive true crime series, and one-off projects. We have already piloted a South Asian founder interview series and are currently in early stages with a BuzzFeed reporter on a one-off limited series project.
