The Issue:

Catalist has calculated that the total number of votes cast by Asian Americans grew from 2016 to 2020 by almost 40 percent, reaching about 7 million. TargetSmart put the increase at about 47 percent. The potential to shift policies, both at a local as well as a national level, is at an all-time high. We know that young AAPIs have the greatest potential to reshape civic infrastructure in the United States. In 2020, youth in swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania helped shift the presidential election. However, aside from presidential elections, civic engagement in the United States is extremely low, especially for low-income areas and communities of Color. That’s because youth outreach is usually only rallied around presidential elections - and the attention is often inequitably distributed.
An investment needs to be made with artists, those who create culture, to work strategically with organizations, those who change systems

The Solution:

Asian PaCIVICS Radio aims to equip both the artists as well as grassroots organization to create scalable, sustaining change by creating a culture of civic engagement.
We will be funding and mentoring artists to compose songs about a current or upcoming policy objective in partnership with a grassroots organization working directly on the issue. Additionally, we’ll be working with organizations by providing communications support so that they can access unconventional platforms to reach new audiences.
As data is collected from these partnerships across the country, we’ll record and share the learning so that each community can be more effective in their efforts. Nationally, we’ll create a new public-facing campaign called Asian PaCIVICS Radio by interviewing artists and organizations to share their created works through a podcast series and interactive website with calls to action to support local and national policy campaigns.
