The Issue:

Dragon and lion dances hold significant cultural and historical importance in AAPI communities. It serves as vibrant expressions of culture, art, and sport. Currently, there are more than 100 dance teams across the country that are comprised heavily of AAPI youth. While some teams have formal training in dragon and lion dancing, most lack adequate access to it. Often, these teams are smaller groups affiliated with community institutions in AAPI communities, such as churches, temples, language schools, community centers, and college or high school clubs. The widespread existence of these groups in our communities, many without formal training, demonstrate an eagerness by many, especially AAPI youth, to learn, express, and connect with their cultural identities. Lack of formal training and a connected community of practice often leave these groups without the foundation to sustain and thrive as important pillars of culture and community. Without guidance from experienced practitioners, teams may find it difficult to develop and refine their skills. This hinders their ability to showcase the authentic beauty and complexity of the art form. Without proper guidance and understanding of its cultural significance, there is a risk of diluting or misrepresenting the art form. Preserving the cultural authenticity of this art is crucial to its continued relevance. Unfortunately, access issues to proper training and mentorship opportunities are exacerbated due to financial and geographic barriers. Many teams also face challenges in finding opportunities to perform and showcase high-level athletic and artistic talent. Due to a lack of dedicated and competitive platforms, many groups are unable to elevate their skill and showcase the highest level of the art to a broader audience.

The Solution:

The USADLDSA actively addresses the lack of proper dragon and lion dance training and platforms for showcasing high-level athletic and artistic talent through several initiatives: Dragon and Lion Dance Seminars The USADLDSA hosts dragon and lion dance seminars across the U.S. taught by world renowned Masters and Instructors. This includes Master Siow Ho Phiew and representatives of the International Kun Seng Keng Lion and Dragon Dance Alliance, who hold multiple world lion dance competition titles. These seminars are attended by hundreds of individuals that represent groups from states across the U.S., such as California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, New York, Hawaii, Arizona, Illinois, and Colorado. At these seminar, dancers of all ages, ethnic background, and genders learn the physical and cultural fundamentals of dragon and lion dance. National and International Competitions Competitions are important showcases of the vibrant art of dragon and lion dancing. They bring together teams from different regions, foster friendly competition, and inspire excellence. The USADLDSA hosts annual national competitions and send member organizations to participate in international competitions to promote. In 2022, we hosted the largest lion dance competition in North America with 18 teams competing from across the U.S. This June, we’ve expanded our competition and will be hosting 25 competing teams spanning two competitive categories (traditional and acrobatic high pole). These national competitions are live-streamed and are watched by a widespread national and international audience. This August, we will also be sending two USADLDSA member groups to compete internationally alongside the world’s best group at the Genting World Lion Dance Championships in Malaysia. Mentorship and Individual Instruction The USADLDSA has also recently implemented our Mentorship Program. Through this program, some of our more established teams either send experienced team members to help teach newer and less experienced teams about the art of dragon and lion dance or host them in their cities. Not only do these newer teams gain access to personalized coaching, but they also gain access to resources to higher quality costumes and props from Asia that are typically difficult and costly to obtain.
